The Future of Product Managers

These days, everyone seems to want to be a Product Manager. It’s the new “Next Big Thing” job, like wearing Crocs ironically or sporting a handlebar mustache. But let’s take a moment to get serious. Product management has evolved significantly since its early days when it was simply about shipping products on time and within budget. The rise of the experience economy has transformed the role of product managers to focus on creating meaningful and delightful experiences for customers.

As Joe Pine, author of “The Experience Economy,” defines it, “An experience occurs when a company intentionally uses services as the stage, and goods as props, to engage individual customers in a way that creates a memorable event.” This definition perfectly captures the essence of the experience economy and why the role of the product manager is no longer just about the product itself, but also the experience that surrounds it.

As a Product Manager and Experience Designer, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s top brands. I can confidently say that the Product Manager role will continue to be vital in the future. However, the future of product management will also pave the way for the Experience Manager. The experience economy demands it, as customers are looking for more than just a product. They crave a seamless and memorable experience.

The Experience Manager will design and deliver end-to-end experiences that engage customers at every touchpoint. They’ll work closely with product managers to ensure that the product and experience align and that the product delivers on the promised experience. This is an exciting time for both roles as they continue to evolve and adapt to the market’s changing demands.

So, whether you aspire to be a Product Manager or an Experience Manager, the future is bright. Just be prepared to stay nimble, flexible, and open to learning new things as the roles continue to change. Let’s work together to create unforgettable experiences that keep customers coming back for more. #productmanagement #experiencemanager #futureofwork #experienceeconomy
